This one might require some backstory. A few years back I bought one of the original pressing Lincoln longboxes that Linnell found under his stairs and were sold at a few concerts around that period. When I took my purchase home from the concert, an old note fell out- on it were scrawled what appeared to be the original discarded lyrics to the song Thermostat! Undiscouraged by the editorial precision of the finished recording, I grew to prefer these original lyrics, which seemed to reflect Linnell’s apparent inability to read a thermostat or even know what exactly it is designed to do. When I heard about this project I knew immediately I wanted to bring the original lyrics, unfettered by irrational creative censorship, back into the fold. What better way to commemorate the 25th anniversary of John Henry than with an unearthed bit of heretofore unknown lore? You’re welcome, TMBG fans!
